ARIS App 2.2.2 causing problems for our scenarios

    by chasleff » Thu Oct 27, 2016 4:13 pm

    Hello,

So we are in a bit of a panic here. All 41 of our scenarios in production have been negatively affected by the latest update. Our consortium uses iPads for all their work and now much of the content is microscopic because previous versions of the ARIS App were actually iPhone targetted, but our needs for larger image forced us to create our games and make them look good on iPads. They do not look good on iPads any more due to the automatic reduction in font size and related content tied to screen size.

We were allowing our management software to push out updates automatically and before I could stop it, half of them automatically updated.

Until we are able to adjust our programs, can you recommend a solution to tide us over temporarily. Is there still a place where we can have people install an older ARIS app version.

    Thanks,

Whoah, that sucks. Am I correct in thinking that there isn't a bug, this new feature of "iPad resolution" changes the ground under your designs? Does it feel this way for just the custom web stuff or all of ARIS?

I was contacted by ARIS and they will roll back the App until we can prepare for it better. It will take a few days though, That is very nice of ARIS. to do that for us. I know the App was always designed for iPhone, and we were the ones who insisted on using iPads. And we adjusted the styling accordingly. It will be painful to adjust all our existing programs, but it does need to be done.

The customizations did shrink as well, so that will have to be addressed eventually too.

I would like our scenarios to work on both iPads and iPhones and look good in both. Right now I am not sure how to do that within the ARIS software when having so much non out-of-the-box content.

As Charles mentioned, the best short term plan is going to be to roll back the new iPad sized screens and provide it as a beta feature for a little longer while folks are able to comment on its design.

We do our best to avoid situations like this by giving beta app access to core contributors and folks with service contracts, but it seems we overlooked this change in the testing process.

Thanks for the great communication Charles. We love working with you!

    David,

In trying to remedy the issue yesterday, I did try to download a 2.1.x beta app from the ARIS beta page and I received errors. I was using iPad Air with iOS release 10.1. Is ARIS aware of any issues in downloading the beta apps to a device with the latest iOS?

I am having this problem too! (I just posted a question in the basics thread before I saw this thread). I need to play my game on iPads with 2 classes soon and the text is sooooo small now. How do I "roll back" ARIS? Or will it be pushed as a regular app store update until this is fixed? Thanks for your help!!

Julie, Are you able to download old apps from arisgames.org/beta? I have tried and get errors.

No, I saw you were having trouble doing that so I didn't try it yet. I was hoping there'd be more info provided here. Maybe I'll try...

The default text size for the text areas of plaques and such is much smaller by default. I notice that the iPad setting text size adjustment has no affect on any ARIS text. So currently the only way to increase text size is to use HTML/CSS styling in the text areas where we can control these things.

    This is a sentence.

    <p style="font-size:x-large;">This is a sentence</p>

    or for a whole page...

    <div style="font-size:x-large;">
    This is a sentence. <br>
    This is a sentence. <br>
This is a sentence. This is a sentence. This is a sentence. This is a sentence. This is a sentence. <br>

<p>This is a sentence. This is a sentence. This is a sentence. This is a sentence. This is a sentence. This is a sentence.</p>

I was informed today that it is not possible to roll back an app that has ipad support to a version that removes that support. There will have to be another way to handle it.

ARIS will need to know examples of what is rendering too small. Where in the game it is happening.

For us, we have implemented a lot of HTML and CSS in areas where we can do that to customize the user experience. Most all of those have shrunk by a factor of 2.5x.

I also notice that the default text in text areas without any custom styling has shrunk from what we were use to on iPads. I tried to see if there were any iPad general setting that could at least affect these and I had no luck. We have used embedded CSS on a bunch of our pages, but we have 41 published 'games' that will have to be touched on every page.

One solution going forward for us will be to use external styling somehow. Where we put it and how to maintain it though is an issue.
